Dear Parents and Guardians, Today, students brought home their progress report cards for quarter 3 but also some students picked up voluntarily a yellow permission slip and expectations page regarding a planned student-led “ICE Walkout” scheduled for Monday, February 23. As previously communicated in collaboration with our district office, we shared a memo outlining both student and district expectations related to this type of activity. While the school and district do not support this walkout, our priority during the school day remains the safety, supervision, and well-being of all students. Students have been informed that in order to participate, they must: Submit a completed permission slip with parent/guardian consent. Follow all school and district expectations outlined in the attached document. Cooperate fully with staff directions before, during, and after the activity. We kindly ask that you speak with your son/daughter about: The behavioral and safety expectations that must be followed to avoid possible disciplinary consequences. The public nature of this event, including the potential presence of media coverage. The importance of understanding the purpose of their participation, rather than simply following a trend. The permission slip and expectations document are provided in both English and Spanish and must be completed in full. Once your child submits the signed form, you will receive a notification message at your primary phone number on file confirming their intent to participate. If you did not authorize your child to participate, please contact our office immediately so we can ensure your son/daughter remains on campus during the event. We appreciate your partnership and support as we work together to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.

Hello Parents, we want to remind families that any student activity that disrupts the learning environment, including walkouts, may result in disciplinary action. While students have the right to express their opinions, it must be done in an orderly, respectful, and safe manner in coordination with law enforcement and school administration. Please note that any absence due to participation in a walkout will be marked as unexcused, and discipline may be assigned if students engage in unsafe or unruly behavior. We encourage you to have a conversation with your Cobras about making safe and responsible choices. If you are aware of any planned student activities, we would greatly appreciate you contacting our office so we can continue to support communication with all families. Thank you for your partnership and support.

This week, Somerton Middle School will be administering AZELLA, a state assessment that measures students’ English language proficiency. We kindly ask for your support in helping our Cobras who will be testing have a successful week. Please ensure students get a good night’s sleep and arrive at school on time each day so they can maximize their energy and focus during testing alongside their peers. As a school, we strive to reclassify or demonstrate growth in their language proficiency through this assessment. Once students pass AZELLA, they will not need to take the assessment again. We are proud of our 190 Cobras who will be testing this week and encourage families to help motivate and support them. If your child has classes with Mr. Noriega, Mr. Jacuinde, Ms. Arvizu, and select students from Mrs. N. Garcia, Mr. Castillo, or Mr. Iniguez, we kindly ask that you refrain from picking them up early during their scheduled testing time. Students will be completing a unit assessment and will not be able to continue working on it if they leave early and return later. Students who are not testing will continue to follow their regular class schedules. We ask families to please speak with students about maintaining positive school behavior, following the proper dress code, and checking backpacks to ensure items that may distract from the learning environment are kept at home. We will also continue enforcing our school ID expectation during Spirit Week. Students must wear their ID and ensure all clothing remains appropriate for school. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Today is the second day we are allowing students to take their iPads home to complete any missing or incomplete digital assignments. This is a great opportunity for students to catch up and stay on track academically. You may review ParentVue for students standing in every class. Progress report grades will close at the end of next week. Please remember that progress report grades are only a checkpoint and are not final grades for Quarter 3. Final Quarter 3 grades will close at the end of March before Spring Break. Thank you for your continued support in helping our Cobras stay on track.

Good morning and happy Saturday, We are sorry to interrupt your weekend, we are reaching out to share a safety concern and ask for your support. Recently, students have been bringing items to school to sell or share such as spicy gummies, teas, over-the-counter medications, and other products. These items have disrupted learning and, more importantly, have caused harm to some of our Cobras. Our priority is always to keep students safe and focused on learning, and we appreciate your help in reminding students not to bring these items to school. Additionally, despite multiple reminders this week, disposable water bottles are still being brought to campus and misused. Students have soaked others during passing periods, in lunch lines, on buses, and bottles are being thrown in the air creating safety risks and littering our campus. For these reasons, disposable bottles are no longer allowed. Refillable bottles ARE allowed and we have 7 refillable water stations around campus. While we cannot control what comes from home, we will continue to adjust school expectations as needed to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment, even when updates are not explicitly listed in the student handbook. Thank you for your continued partnership and support in keeping our Cobras safe.
